How an EMI is worked out

An EMI is a fixed monthly payment. Each one pays the interest due that month, and the rest reduces the loan.

EMI = P × r × (1 + r)n ÷ ((1 + r)n − 1)

P
Loan amount
r
Monthly interest rate (yearly rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100)
n
Number of monthly instalments
  • A larger loan amount raises the EMI in direct proportion.
  • A higher interest rate raises both the EMI and the total interest.
  • A longer tenure lowers the EMI but increases the total interest you pay.
Where each year's payments go Example: ₹10,00,000 at 9% a year for 10 years
